Theodore “Ted” Tobias Mappus, Jr. (Mr. Mappus) was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina and is a graduate of Duke University. Mr. Mappus spent six years in the Navy and fourteen years in the Navy Reserves, retiringTed Profile as a Lieutenant. Starting his insurance career at a local Charleston insurance agency, Mr. Mappus quickly learned that there was a better way to do insurance so he founded Mappus Insurance Agency in 1960.
That same year, Mr. Mappus earned his Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation; known for being the highest designation in the insurance industry. Mr. Mappus quickly grew a reputation for being “the” insurance agency in Charleston. In the beginning, the agency was located at 12 State Street in the historic district in downtown Charleston.
During his insurance career, Mr. Mappus served at various capacities within the insurance industry at the state and national level having served as a past president of the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers Association of South Carolina (IIABSC) as well as the State of South Carolina National Director for Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers Association.
Mr. Mappus was very involved with the community having served on the board for various organizations such as the Charleston Salvation Army, Palmetto Safety Council, Franke Home, and the Charleston Exchange Club; serving in various leadership capacities at each. For his service at the Salvation Army, Mr. Mappus was recognized and given the lifelong honorary member status that is achieved by few.
Mr. Mappus was not only active in the insurance industry and community but was also very active in politics having served as a member of the South Carolina House of Representative from 1987-1990. In 1990, Mr. Mappus was awarded the South Carolina Order of the Palmetto by then Governor Carroll Campbell for outstanding service, commitment and dedication to the citizens of South Carolina. This award is the highest civilian honor one can receive in the State of South Carolina.
Mr. Mappus currently resides in the Charleston community and enjoys spending time socializing with his family and friends.
